In addition to a very active law practice, Bill's career includes previously owning and operating several businesses, including The New Albany Gazette (1969-1979), The Tallahatchie Broadcasting Corporation (1979-1983) and he is part owner of Rutledge Printing, Bill raises livestock, plays tennis, and was a long-distance runner for many years.

He and his wife, Gayle, have seven sons and reside in New Albany.
